Archaeology

The most notable archaeological find in Wold Newton was an Anglo-Saxon burial urn excavated in 1828; see the Urns page.  It having been ploughed out long ago, the exact location of the excavated barrow was a mystery, until an aerial survey by Contour Geophysics during the 2018 summer drought identified its probable location.  It also gave a wider context for the site, identifying evidence of human settlement in the area from the Bronze Age.  Here's the outline of an Iron Age settlement in the parish.

Modest finds, field archaeology and crop marks evidence human settlement over several millennia.  You can see some of what has been turned up on the Artifacts page.
